List of Parks and Preserves in Broward

List of Urban Natural Areas in Broward County by City

These parks and preserves vary widely in how much of the property (all or just a few areas) is maintained as natural. This natural area list is a compilation of several lists, but primarily: 1) the Institute for Regional Conservation, Conservation Areas list and 2) Florida Natural Areas Inventory, Florida Conservation Lands interactive map. You can help by identiying natural areas not listed below or those no longer being maintained as natural areas. Email us.

If you are concerned about preserving space for native plants and wildlife, please talk with the managing authority about protecting and restoring natural areas. Don't assume that someone else will speak in behalf of nature or the designated use of this land. Your public or community voice is important. Keep in mind that staff may have no knowledge, resources, or funds, so making others aware and finding solutions with other partners in an effort to reclaim natural areas may be helpful toward restoring places in parks or an entire park as a natural area maintained for both the public and nature. Happily, some of these parks and preserves are maintained exclusively for habitat and species protection with relatively small areas for parking, trails, and public education.

Each listing should have the Park or Preserve Name, Acreage, Managing Authority, and Address
KEY to Managing Authorities:
Broward County in green
State of Florida in dark blue

Other non-city in purple

Many addresses are missing. To improve the list, email us, with the correct address and the best link for information about the park or preserve. If there is no formal address, provide the block number and street on the best side for public access or parking. Let us know of other errors. As far as we know, this is the only comprehensive list of natural area lands in Broward. The total acreage on this list (natural and developed) is 6,414 (see footnote at the bottom). With improvements, this list could be a useful resource for many.

Park Name in blue is a link to an Institute for Regional Conservation plant list.
"Information" is a link to an official or unoffical park website with information about the park.

Footnotes: The western two-thirds of Broward County east of the dike is known as Everglade Management Lands and comprised about 800 square miles of wetland (over 500,000 acres) managed primarily by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The Everglades Buffer Strip North (east of the dike) is about 1,155 acres.

There is an additional 5,174 acreas of protected natural land in the urban areas on public and private properties that are closed to the public (restricted access). Restricted access properties exist for a variety of reasons including: 1) the land is privately owned (but managed by agreement to protect species and habitats), 2) the land lacks access (usually because of costs such as opening and locking gates, building trails, parking, patroling for safety, preventing trash and camping, preventing poaching, etc.), or 3) the habitat is so rare, small, or fragile that development as a park threatens one or more rare species still living there.

The mission of the Florida Native Plant Society is to promote the preservation, conservation, and restoration of the native plants and native plant communities of Florida.
